Odyssey 2020 is a public installation and interactive experience designed for the Strawberry Music Festival, hosted by ModernSky — a leading record label in China. The project introduced the festival’s new branded characters, while inviting participants on an imaginative "space odyssey" as the core concept.

The Ask

ModernSky was seeking installation concepts for potential inclusion in their 2021 Strawberry Music Festival. That year’s theme centered on a space-inspired narrative and the debut of a new lineup of branded characters called "IMO". The brief emphasized both creativity and feasibility, with final concepts selected through a competition hosted by the organization.

The Answer

I collaborated with an industrial designer to create our submission, Odyssey 2020 - a public installation and interactive experience designed for the Strawberry Music Festival.

The centerpiece was a one-person spaceship structure functioning as both an immersive sound booth and photobooth. Its exterior, inspired by ModernSky’s iconic “M” shape, invited social media interaction, while the interior - a narrow, double-layered soundproof chamber - delivered a sensory-rich, audio-driven journey.

Once inside, visitors embarked on a three-part “space odyssey.” The experience began with a solo voyage, evoking the feeling of drifting alone through the cosmos. Midway, participants encountered the newly introduced "IMO" characters and joined a virtual space party. Before exiting, they were prompted to capture a commemorative photo - completing the journey with a playful, shareable memento.

The Result

Odyssey 2020 won the People's Choice Award in ModernSky’s 2020 MVM Installation Art Competition. The concept received 8,000+ public votes and earned recognition from 16 professional judges, solidifying its impact as both a crowd favorite and a creatively compelling installation.
